Bacterial Overgrowth Test
Typically, small amounts of bacteria are found in the small intestine. Occasionally, additional bacteria migrate from the large intestine into the small intestine, creating symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas and diarrhea. You will be asked to drink a small amount of lactulose solution an hour before you come in. A breath sample will be collected and analyzed for hydrogen levels every 15 minutes over a time span of 2-3 hours to determine if bacterial overgrowth is present.
